62 days — 'Coronet' is an improved pinkeye purplehull type. The plants are upright and compact. At the green shell stage (about 62 days), the peas are green with a light-red colored eye and its pods are purple and average length of about six inches. If allowed to grow to maturity and the seeds harvested dry, they have a maroon colored eye and a smooth seed coat.
'Coronet' was bred at the University of Georgia, Agricultural Experiment Station as a complex, but stabilized cross between 'Pinkeye Purple Hull' and 'Iron'. It reportedly has a tolerance to cowpea strains of Southern bean mosaic and cucumber mosaic viruses. Released in 1975. An heirloom cowpea variety that sets strong yields of deep purple colored pods on compact 24” plants, Coronet is an improved Pinkeye Purple Hull type. Attractive purple pods are filled with traditional cowpeas that are excellent for eating fresh or dried. Seeds are cream colored with a purple-pink spot at the hilum, or ‘eye’.
